Consider the Athenian ideal of a balanced education. From the book Greek Realities: Life and Thought in Ancient Greece, By Finley Hooper "They could play some flute but should not neglect wrestling." They avoided the excesses of life. They might focus on music or philosophy but spent enough time so that their bodies did not become soft."

“Break bread and drink wine all you want with others but when it’s go time, make sure you can shed blood with me.”~Michael Kurcina

The origins of this quote come from my youth. All of my quotes are written from some event I experienced. I’m reminded of a fight for my life I had decades ago, over something stupid and it escalated very quickly (as acts of stupidity commingled with bravado always do). the crew I expected to back us up showed up late to help and so we were left to fend for ourselves against a larger gang which encircled us. Our support was out getting drunk and high with another crew and when the melee happened we were outmatched and already in the first fray; our ‘friends’ showed up long after it was over. There were two waves of attacks. The first one was exhausting and to make things more difficult I already fought their best guy 15 minutes earlier. My blood sugar was low. I hadnt eaten since morning and i was now gassed, unfocused and dizzy. Somehow I pushed through. After the first clench we all broke free and clashed again, the second time with a few weapons. My hands & arms were so full of blood and tired from striking and grappling that I could not close them into fists, but I managed to pull my opponents eyeball half-way out and he shat his pants. He was screaming and I could smell it strongly. We fought atop a row of motor bikes we knocked over. A difficult position being upside down with metal beneath you. We broke the fray. He came back with a gun to shoot me but peace was made through an intermediary. It was a true life or death situation. Even the women we were with fought bravely by our side. We survived and to this day I think what is most important to me is surrounding myself with people who are willing to hurl themselves into danger with me when the time comes. You should do the same with your own circle of family, friends and familiars.
